Do it! Lots of pets sitting in shelters waiting of a home.
I know a kid that drove to Kentucky, from norther Wi, to pay hundreds of dollars to get a Border Collie.
Coulda got a great dog here at the humane society for 50 bucks.

I’ve got a big yard, and with me, they’re guaranteed walks, belly rubs, and a lot of time to sleep.

Yeah, I’m onboard for rescues. Perry was great, but far too much of a puppy for me. An older dog would be great.

Do it! Just be upfront with the shelter/rescue about what you are looking for, and they should be able to help you find a good boy/girl.

Older dogs are also a lot harder for shelters to adopt out. For a lot of folks, myself included, adopting older dogs is the only good way to go. While there are trade offs in having to deal with however they were socialized by someone else and limitations on how much you can train them to change, they’re also wonderful companions that are past all the puppy and adolescent dog stages and all that goes with them. Puppy’s are hard, and they really almost require having someone at home much of the time. In my house, two adults with two full-time jobs is a situation that wouldn’t work well for either us or a puppy/younger dog(s) that need more constant supervision and stimulation.

As long as you can commit to them for their entire life, go for it! It’ll be among the best decisions you’ve made and you’ll be the sun, moon and stars to that little doggo.

I can do it for an older dog for sure. It’ll be a good move into dog ownership.

Used dogs are a better deal than almost any used car, regardless of miles or previous maintenance. Rarely do you get back less than what you put in, and those fellas really need homes.

Grew up with two rescue dogs, 100% agree.
Besides, old dog excuses a new car purchase, eh?

They are intelligent and extremely trusting. They are widely used in animal testing because of that combination.
The beagles I’ve met tend to be pretty vocal as well, which may or may not matter much to you.

For sale to good owner: Cold War era cruise basselope. One owner, very low miles. Hardy used. Make me an offer.

The ole misdirection, yep.
I only ever got one dog from the Humane Society as a pup. I call her my seed dog, because all the others after seemed to just appear on our door step somehow.

When we rescued my first dog and the agreement between my parents was that if my Mom was allowed to get a dog then my Dad could get a truck for towing.
The dog outlived both trucks.

He’s such a goodboy. Though this picture really gets his proportions all wrong. It makes him look normal, not like the longboi he is.

Can confirm. Ozzman (who is probably part hound dog) bays at all the animals he sees on his walks, it’s pretty funny.

I love animals in general, but I flippin love dogs man. We had a little scare with a lump on our boxer yesterday. After we got the good news I took him to Starbucks for a puppachino . It was pouring down rain and I didn’t want him to get it all over the car so I hopped in the back of the A lltrack for a minute with him so he could have it right away.

Are you looking for quiet, easy going, not really high energy, generally healthy (Except their teeth)? Want something with big dog looks but the living space needs of a much smaller dog?
Well if that is you allow me to sing the praises of the glorious greyhound! There are other oppos that can sing their praises as well.
Thanks to the closing of tracks in Florida there will soon be a lot looking for homes. Ruby is two but has the calm demeanor of a much older dog. If you’re interested in an older dog contact a local rescue and they can help you find a dog that was successful enough as a racer to have been kept for breeding. I’ve seen them ranging in age from 5-8 years. Average life expectancy of a greyhound is around 12 years.

The only issue with a greyhound is I’ll have to buy it a parka and odds are good it’ll sleep in my bed when I’m at work.

I may be biased, but I’m failing to see the issues. Ruby is crated during the day, and she does quite well when it’s time to get into her crate.

-40? You need a Saint Bernard to carry one of those little kegs of booze around it’s neck then.

My mom got a retired fox hound from a hunting club after my Dad died. She’s not too energetic but super well behaved and gentle. And virtually never barks.
